About Us

Okini Restaurant & Bar is the first independent project of the soon-to-be husband and wife team, Chef Kevin Lin and Steph Wan. The West Coast Japanese cuisine is influenced by their Asian Canadian upbringing and international travels.

Located in Kerrisdale, the intimate dining room and full-service bar leads to an open kitchen and french doors that extend the room’s old world charm with a heated and covered atrium. The couple’s deep appreciation for wine transforms what was historically a bank vault into their walk-in wine cellar.

Okini meaning "thank you" in the Kansai dialect of Western Japan, is a nod to Chef Kevin Lin’s Taiwanese-Japanese heritage. His humble beginnings started in 2002 as an apprentice in a local sushi restaurant which paved the way for his culinary journey — first by completing a program in Culinary Arts, then pursuing higher education in Switzerland with a Les Roches degree in Hotel Management and Food & Beverage Operations. Keen on exploring diverse culinary landscapes, Chef Kevin refined his craft in Singapore and Hong Kong at the acclaimed five-star Mandarin Oriental hotel group before returning to his hometown, Vancouver, British Columbia.

The cocktail program at Okini reflects the inventive spirit and curious nature of managing partner, Steph Wan. Far from conventional, the menu encourages everyone to try something unexpected. During her previous life as a Digital Product Designer, Steph's love for the industry evolved through her personal blog — a passion she continues to nurture as she immerses herself at the restaurant. Now she seamlessly integrates her palate, design, and hospitality with a focus on crafting memorable experiences for their guests.

Since their opening in 2021, they were nominated as the ‘Best West Coast’ by the Vancouver Magazine in 2022 following with the ‘Best Kerrisdale Restaurant’ in 2024, and ‘Best Kerrisdale Restaurant’ by Georgia Straight’s 27th Annual Golden Plates Awards. The duo continues to draw inspiration from the vast landscapes of their travels, including every aspect of the dining encounter with a sense of wonder and sophistication.
